It was certainly another warm one but not a tropical night
anywhere in the UK. A tropical night is when the temperatures do not drop below
20C all night.
But it wasn’t far off last night. Heathrow in London and
Shoeburyness did not drop below 19.5C all night, Kenley in Surrey below
19.4C.
It was more refreshing elsewhere.
Aboyne, which saw the highest temperature in Scotland
yesterday at 29C, dipped to 9.2C and Cardiff Bute Park, which tipped in at 31.2C
yesterday, saw temperatures by night drop to 14.9C.
Of course these temperature readings are taken at Met
Office-regulated sites and are not that indicative of the temperature in your
house or your bedroom – which has often been designed to trap heat. There will
be more accumulative heat over the next few days for many.
Tropical nights were a feature of the late June heatwave
when the heat spikes were more intense and the air more humid. A new June
minimum was set at Cardiff Bute Park at 23.5C.
There could be a tropical night tonight and the most likely
places for this again are London and the home counties.
As we draw in more of an easterly wind on Friday and the
weekend, the worst of the heat will move a little further westwards into
central southern England.
