- China’s NEV retail penetration held at a high 62.8% in June as gasoline vehicles continued to collapse.
- NEV exports jumped 152.7% year-on-year, accounting for a record 56.9% of total passenger vehicle exports.
China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) retail sales fell year-on-year in June for the sixth consecutive month. Still, an explosive surge in exports emerged as the industry’s key bright spot.
China’s NEV retail sales came in at 1.007 million units in June, down 9.4% from a year earlier, according to data released Wednesday by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
That was, however, a 6.0% increase from May, marking the first time this year that monthly sales returned above the 1 million mark.
Despite the retail pressure, NEV penetration remained elevated. The NEV retail penetration rate was 62.8% in June, up 9.5 percentage points year-on-year and just 0.1 percentage point below May’s record high.

The core pressure behind the market’s decline came from gasoline vehicles. Under the severe impact of high oil prices, retail sales of conventional gasoline passenger vehicles plunged 39% year-on-year in June, the CPCA said.
Among them, pure gasoline vehicle retail sales fell 42%, while ordinary hybrid models declined just 7%. The CPCA said high oil prices and shifting consumer preferences are accelerating the pace of electrification.
Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) continued to serve as the main pillar of the NEV market. BEV retail sales reached 685,000 units in June, up 3.6% year-on-year and 7.4% from May.
