An opportunity could become available for Kent Hughes on the trade market.
The Anaheim Ducks are desperately trying to move forward Frank Vatrano because of the offer sheet the Philadelphia Flyers submitted to Leo Carlsson.
David Pagnotta reported the information, and the Ducks are even willing to pay by attaching a draft pick to whichever team agrees to acquire Vatrano.
“They’re willing to package up a draft pick with Frank Vatrano.”
In other words, Anaheim wants to get out from under his contract.
Enough so that they are willing to add a draft pick to help facilitate the trade.
This is the kind of situation that could interest a team like the Montreal Canadiens.
A veteran player, a former 37-goal scorer, and a potential top-six winger. All of that, plus a draft pick, in exchange for virtually nothing!
Frank Vatrano is available for less than free in Anaheim
The Ducks are genuinely in a difficult situation right now.
Vatrano, 32, carries a cap hit of just over $4.5 million per season through 2028.
He scored 37 goals and 60 points during the 2023-24 season with those same Ducks.
He added 21 goals last season (45 points), but this season has been much more difficult for him.
Those numbers help explain why Anaheim wants to move him.
For Kent Hughes, is this a good opportunity?
A draft pick attached to Vatrano would once again add valuable assets while helping move the Canadiens’ rebuild toward its conclusion.
