Tom Dundon engraves family members before Hurricanes players on Stanley Cup

The Carolina Hurricanes brought their Stanley Cup celebration to downtown Raleigh, North Carolina, as fans cheered them on from sidewalks.
Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon is facing criticism after engraving the names of six family members onto the Stanley Cup ahead of those who helped win their first championship in 20 years.
Dundon added the names of his wife and five children immediately after his own, placing them ahead of front-office members, coaches, players and staff.
As a result, Tom Dundon, Veruschka Dundon, Caden Dundon, Dax Dundon, Drew Dundon, Blake Dundon, and Tagan Dundon now occupy the first two lines of the iconic trophy.
As a direct result of the Stanley Cup’s strictly limited space, several deserving notable individuals were omitted from the Cup this year. Defenseman Joel Nystrom, who appeared in 38 regular-season games, was left off the engraving, as were new minority investors Brett Jefferson, Marc Grandisson and Bobby Farnham.
This isn’t the first time an NHL team owner has made such a decision. Most recently, Florida Panthers owner Vincent Viola included his wife and three children on the Stanley Cup following the team’s back-to-back championships in 2024 and 2025.
The Hurricanes captured their first Stanley Cup championship in 20 years, defeating the Vegas Golden Knights 4-2 in the series and clinching the title with a 3-0 victory in Game 6.
