Some World Cup fever as we take a look at Newport celebrations for Italy’s 2006 win

With the 2026 tournament underway, we take a look back at how they celebrated.
At the home of Newport restaurant owner John Alonzi, more than 40 relatives and friends gathered to watch the match, creating an atmosphere filled with anticipation and excitement.
The group, which assembled around three TVs adorned with images of the Pope and the Virgin Mary, experienced a rollercoaster of emotions throughout the game.
Tension mounted when French captain Zinedine Zidane scored early on, but relief followed as Italy’s Marco Materazzi equalised.
The mood shifted dramatically when a second Italian goal was disallowed, leading to a flurry of expletives, while Zidane’s sending off sparked cheers from the Italian supporters.
When Italy triumphed in the penalty shoot-out, winning 5-3, the celebrations erupted.
Mr Alonzi said: “It’s about time, too.”
His granddaughter, Chloe, who was celebrating her eighth birthday, expressed her joy, stating: “I’m feeling really happy. I just knew they were going to win.”
His mother, Teresina, added: “I’m very happy, ecstatic.”
Tony Alonzi, 37, concluded: “This is the best result.”
The 2026 World Cup final is being held on Sunday, July 19.
