Two of Mexico’s giants will square off at the Estadio Universitario on Saturday when Tigres UANL hosts Cruz Azul in a crunch encounter between Liga MX title contenders. A gap of two points is all that separates fourth-place Cruz Azul from fifth-place Tigres, who haven’t lost an Apertura fixture in nearly two months.

Guido Pizarro has his old club on track for a play-off place at the very least in his first term as a head coach, but Tigres is also just three points off the Apertura summit. The perennial title challenger rounded out September with back-to-back wins and is undefeated since mid-August when Club América snatched victory in San Nicolás de los Garza.

Cruz Azul won the last time these teams faced off during last season’s Clausura back in May, but hasn’t managed a win at the Estadio Universitario since July 2022. La Máquina has lost twice and drawn once in three visits to the ground since then and is in the mood to break its duck.

That being said, Nicolás Larcamón’s men were crushed to lose at Tijuana in their last outing, pushing them away from the places of privilege in Liga MX. Cruz Azul will hope to make up for that miss this weekend and push their name back into the equation for the top spot.
