Alcaraz has missed both Roland-Garros and Wimbledon as he recovers from a wrist injury sustained during the Barcelona Open in mid-April. Any hopes that the seven-time major champion could return to action for the ATP 1000 event in Montreal in the first two weeks of August appeared to be quashed on Thursday when the entry list was published – without Alcaraz’s name.
A star-studded tournament will feature 71 of the top 72 players in the ATP rankings, including world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, 24-time major champion Novak Djokovic, and home favourite Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Alcaraz will not compete as he continues his recovery towards the final Grand Slam of the year, the US Open in New York, where the singles main draw starts on Sunday, August 30.
However, the news coincided with the Spaniard posting a series of photos and videos of him training at the Carlos Alcaraz Academy in his home country with the caption: ”On the right path.”
In the footage, Alcaraz can be seen doing some light hitting, wrist exercises and playing foot tennis as he offered a promising update to fans.
The 23-year-old’s setback came after a storming start to the year in which he defeated Djokovic in the final of the Australian Open to claim his seventh Grand Slam title.
In doing so, he became the youngest male player to complete the ‘career Grand Slam’ by winning all four majors: the Australian Open, Wimbledon, French Open and the US Open.
He followed that up with victory in Doha and runs to the Indian Wells semi-finals and the final of Monte-Carlo, before suffering an alarming injury on home soil in Barcelona during his opening-round victory against Otto Virtanen.
“I felt my wrist give out on a return during the match,” Alcaraz said following his withdrawal.
“After the tests, we saw that it’s a more serious injury than any of us expected, and I have to listen to my body, so it doesn’t affect me in the future.

“I have to go home to start my recovery as soon as possible with my team – the doctors, and the physical therapist – and get, or try to get, as healthy as possible as soon as possible for the tournaments I have coming up.”
In his absence, Alexander Zverev claimed the Roland-Garros title in June to end his long wait for a major triumph.
The German faces British sensation Arthur Fery in the Wimbledon semi-finals on Friday as he looks to go back-to-back.
The winner of that tie will face whoever comes out on top in a blockbuster clash between Sinner and Djokovic.
