Fake Mitch McConnell hospital image spreads as questions surround his health

Claim:

An image authentically shows Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell in the hospital.

Rating:

In early July 2026, as Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell remained hospitalized for undisclosed health issues, an image (archived) circulated online claiming to show the Republican U.S. lawmaker in the hospital.

The image showed a white man in a hospital bed covered in a myriad of tubes and wires.

One user who shared the image on Reddit wrote, “Oof madone! He looks terrible.”

The image also circulated in posts on X (archived) and in various subreddits (archived, archived) identifying the man in the image as McConnell. Our searches found another version (archived) of what appeared to be the same image taken from the opposite side.

Snopes readers searched our website to verify the image’s authenticity.

Both versions of the image were fake. The artificial intelligence company OpenAI’s verification tool detected SynthID, a watermark that both OpenAI and Google add to their AI creations, in both images. This detection led OpenAI’s verification tool to conclude that the images had likely been created or edited using its tools.

Snopes contacted McConnell’s office to request a comment on the images’ authenticity and will update this story if we receive a response.

In addition to the assessment by OpenAI’s verification tool, inconsistencies in tube placement and wall features in the two images indicated they were fake.

For example, both images showed tubes on the bed that looped around the man’s arm but appeared to lead nowhere (green circle below). One of the man’s breathing tubes also appeared to abruptly end.

Additionally, the images were incorrectly mirrored, as seen in the tubes coming out of the man’s mouth (red circle below) and the wall fixtures behind him (blue square below). If the images were real and taken from either side, as their perspective suggested, the wall fixtures would have remained over the man’s left shoulder and the red tube would have stayed on his right shoulder in both images. That was not the case.

The incorrect mirroring indicated that at least one of the images was fake. The incorrect tubing indicated both images were fabricated.

Questions surround McConnell’s health

Rumors have swirled around McConnell’s health since June 14, when he was reportedly found unconscious at his home in Washington, D.C., and emergency services transported him to the hospital, according to the politics publication Punchbowl News and other politics outlets.

Desiree Townsend, a D.C. reporter, published what she described as an EMS audio dispatch from that day that referenced Advanced Life Support (ALS), a set of lifesaving protocols for critically ill patients. It was not possible to independently verify that the audio was related to McConnell, though credible news outlets — including the New York Times, CNN and The Hill — reported that the call in question was to the senator’s address. Snopes asked McConnell’s office whether the call involved the senator and will update this story if we receive a response.

On July 7, McConnell’s office claimed the senator had spoken to conservative political commentator Scott Jennings (archived), Senate Majority Leader John Thune (archived), and Senate Whip John Barrasso (archived) since the previous day. While this suggested McConnell was responsive, audio recordings of phone calls or other primary evidence substantiating the claims remained unavailable as of this writing.

McConnell’s office sent an email with the above links to Jennings’ post about speaking with McConnell, as well as reported statements from spokespersons for Thune and Barrasso, implying verification that the three conversations took place. Snopes contacted the offices of Thune and Barrasso to independently confirm they spoke to McConnell on July 6 and 7, respectively, and await replies to our questions.

Other X users, including a fake representative and the real Republican U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie, appeared to mock Jennings, Thune and Barrasso’s claims that they spoke to McConnell.

While appearing on CNN’s “The Arena” on July 7, Jennings appeared to laugh off (time code 7:57) a suggestion from host Kasie Hunt that McConnell could call into the show.

Hunt was wrapping up a discussion about McConnell’s health and his team’s lack of transparency surrounding the topic when she asked Jennings, referring to McConnell, “As we wrap up here, do you think he’d be willing to call into the show? Could we get him on the phone now?”

In response, Jennings laughed and appeared to evade the question. He later said (time code 9:17), “I sometimes wonder like if I were laying in a hospital bed, would I want a bunch of people around photographing me? Probably not.”

The latest update on McConnell’s health that Snopes received from his communications team on July 7, 2026, read:

Senator McConnell appreciates the outpouring of support he’s receiving while he continues his recovery in the hospital. The Senator continues to improve, and is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session.
