The Washington Capitals swapped minor-league forwards with the Buffalo Sabres late Monday afternoon.
Zac Funk is headed to the Sabres, with the Capitals receiving winger Tyler Kopff in return.
Kopff is a 23-year-old winger who stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 225 pounds. He, like Funk, was undrafted, signing with the Sabres after playing two seasons for Brown University in the NCAA. Kopff played 40 games in Buffalo’s organization last season, 30 with the AHL’s Rochester Americans and ECHL’s Jacksonville Icemen.
While with the Americans the past two years, Kopff was a teammate of forward Josh Dunne, whom the Capitals inked to a one-year deal in free agency earlier this month. Kopff has recorded six points (1g, 5a) and 23 penalty minutes in 36 career AHL games. He has one year remaining on his contract before becoming a restricted free agent next summer.
Funk has dealt with persistent injury issues since signing with the Capitals out of the WHL. He played in just 33 games last season, split between the Hershey Bears and South Carolina Stingrays.
The 22-year-old winger signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Capitals on March 1, 2024, after leading the WHL with 67 goals as a member of the Prince George Cougars. Funk has one year remaining on his contract before becoming an RFA.
