Air Quality Alert issued for northern Michigan due to Canadian wildfires

NORTHERN MICHIGAN (WPBN/WGTU) — An Air Quality Alert is in effect Wednesday, July 15 across northern Michigan.

Elevated levels of smoke will move into Northern Michigan from the wildfires in Canada.

As of Tuesday, July 14 there are 800 active wildfires in Canada.

You can see the current wildfire conditions through the Canadian Wildland Fire Information System.

Pollutants are expected to be in the ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’ range.

It is recommended that you avoid strenuous outdoor activities, especially for people with heart disease and respiratory diseases such as asthma. Watch for symptoms including wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, dizziness, or burning in nose, throat and eyes.

You can find more information on protecting yourself from smoke on the EGLE website.

According to MiAir as of Tuesday, a thick smoke plume is north of Lake Superior. Winds are expected to shift and start pushing the plume south.

The Upper Peninsula will be impacted first, starting around midnight Wednesday and pushing south in the northern Lower Peninsula.

Air quality concerns will likely linger through Thursday and possibly longer, according to MiAir.
