Off-Broadway’s La MaMa Theatre will host a starry revival of Arthur Miller’s seminal A View From the Bridge later this fall, with performances to begin in the company’s Ellen Stewart Theatre November 27 ahead of a December 13 opening night. The production will continue for a 13-week limited engagement, with Neil Pepe directing.
Starring will be Academy Award winner Sam Rockwell as Eddie, Marin Ireland as Beatrice, and Alfred Molina as Alfieri. Casting is by Taylor Williams.
Rockwell is also producing the engagement, alongside Mark Berger and Play Hooky Productions. Though not a full partnership with La MaMa, Rockwell and Berger hope the revival will serve as a proof of a concept on a new model of using commercial theatre to bring meaningful resources back to nonprofit institutions like La MaMa. The production will make tickets available to La MaMa members at special rates.
“Some of my earliest theatre memories are of coming to La MaMa as a kid and hanging out backstage while my mom was doing experimental theatre of the day. To now return to the Ellen Stewart Theatre with Arthur Miller’s masterpiece with these remarkable collaborators feels like coming full circle,” says Rockwell in a statement. “I started my own career downtown, and institutions like La MaMa have always inspired me—as an artist and as an audience member. They’re the lifeblood of our culture, championing bold new voices and reminding us why the theatre matters. I’ve always considered myself incredibly lucky, and this opportunity feels like kismet.”
First staged on Broadway in 1955, the mid-century Brooklyn–set work centers on Eddie Carbone, a Brooklyn longshoreman forced to question his entire world view when his wife’s cousins arrive from Italy seeking a new life. Tensions arise when one of them falls in love with Eddie’s niece that he’s raised as a daughter. The upcoming revival will be the work’s first major Off-Broadway staging since a 1965 staging starring Robert Duvall and Jon Voight.
Rockwell, best known for a film career that included an Oscar-winning turn in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, along with performances in The Green Mile, Charlie’s Angels, and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, is also a familiar face on the stage. On the Main Stem, he made his debut in A Behanding in Spokane in 2010, later appearing in revivals of Fool for Love and American Buffalo. The latter would bring him a Tony Award nomination in 2022.
The revival will feature scenic design by Scott Pask, costume design by Sarah Laux, lighting design by John Torres, and sound design by Palmer Hefferan. Baseline Theatrical is general managing.
