Recapping the Detroit sports news from Sunday, July 12.
The Midsummer Classic is here, with four Detroit Tigers players representing the American League.
The 2026 MLB All-Star Game is taking place at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia on Tuesday, July 14. The game will be televised on Fox. Those looking for a streaming option can find one on Fox One or Fubo, which carries Fox.
Tigers slugger Riley Greene, making his third All-Star appearance, is starting in left field for the AL for the second year in a row. Catcher Dillon Dingler and shortstop Kevin McGonigle were named as reserves for the AL, as both received their first All-Star selection.

Rounding out the list of Tigers All-Stars is starting pitcher Justin Verlander, who was named to his 10th All-Star team as a “Legends Pick.” Verlander won’t appear in the game, however, as the 43-year-old righty continues to rehab from a hamstring injury.
Detroit’s All-Star representation is slightly smaller than that of the 2025 team, which featured six All-Stars and four starters. But this is only the second time in the last decade the Tigers have sent four players to the All-Star Game, demonstrating how much Detroit’s roster has improved in quality over the last few seasons.
We’ll have all the pertinent live updates from the 2026 All-Star Game right here.

Mid 1: AL 3, NL 0.
A Yordan Alvarez single and Shea Langeliers walk put two runners on for the AL with just one out, while a Junior Caminero groundout advanced both runners into scoring position. Starting shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. then walked to load the bases, and right fielder Cody Bellinger singled to score Alvarez from third base and Langeliers from second.
Center fielder Ben Rice then singled off of NL starter Christopher Sánchez to score Witt, bringing Greene up to bat. Greene struck out on four pitches to end the inning, however, though not without the AL taking a big first-inning lead.
Verlander was asked pregame by AL starting pitcher Dylan Cease if the All-Star experience ever gets old, and the 10-time All-Star told the Fox broadcast that it hasn’t for him.
“It’s about the people here,” he said. “Getting to meet new guys that you compete against. So I have to soak it all up, it’s such an honor.”
Verlander, who has made two starts in the All-Star Game (2012 with the Tigers and 2019 with the Astros) said that starting the All-Star Game is one of the highlights of his career.
“It’s up there with the World Series, I don’t know, 1A and 1B,” he said.
As part of a Philadelphia-centered gimmick, All-Star starters signed a giant lineup card shaped like the Declaration of Independence upon entering the field. Greene’s name is on that card, though it doesn’t seem like the feather the players are using is leaving a strong mark on the paper.
The Delaware County native McGonigle got a loud ovation from the Philadelphia crowd, the loudest likely coming from McGonigle’s friends and family at the All-Star Game.
Verlander got a mixed reaction from the Philadelphia crowd, however, with the veteran laughing at a smattering of boos throughout the ballpark.
Verlander won’t be appearing in tonight’s All-Star Game as he continues rehabbing an injury. But he and his family, including wife Kate Upton, came in looking like royalty on the red carpet.
This All-Star Game is a homecoming of sorts for McGonigle, who grew up a 20-minute drive from Citizens Bank Park while supporting Phillies players like Chase Utley growing up.
McGonigle got to meet Utley as part of his first All-Star experience, with the Tigers sharing the encounter on social media.
