Blow to town centres as closures confirmed

Shoppers in Kent are facing the loss of six Claire’s stores as the UK chain shuts 145 locations across the country.

Earlier this week, administrators reached a rescue deal, selling 156 stores to investment group Modella Capital and safeguarding around 1,000 jobs at the accessories giant.

But the deal did not include 145 stores, which are now set to close permanently.

Closing-down sales, offering 20% off, begins this weekend, though exact closure dates will vary by store, The Sun reports.

Will Wright, Interpath’s UK chief executive and joint administrator, told the paper: “Our intention is to continue to trade the remaining portfolio of stores for as long as we can, while we explore the options available.”

Despite the rescue effort, administrators were unable to find a buyer for these sites, leaving staff facing an uncertain future.

The total number of employees affected has not been confirmed.

The Kent stores set to close are in The Parade, Canterbury; County Square Shopping Centre, Ashford; King Street, Maidstone; Sandgate Road, Folkestone; Tonbridge High Street; and Fremlin Walk, Maidstone.

Claire’s UK entered administration on August 13, shortly after its US parent filed for bankruptcy on August 7.

The American business has since been bought by a separate investor, saving 950 stores.

Modella Capital struck a deal directly with Claire’s US parent company, Ames Watson, to take over 156 UK stores.

While the deal secures part of the chain, some closures and job losses are expected as negotiations with landlords continue.

Employees have been told that decisions will be made as quickly as possible, though the future of the rescued locations remains uncertain.

Joe Price, managing director at Modella Capital, said: “As a firm, we strongly believe that this much-loved brand deserves the chance to remain on the High Street in the UK and Ireland.

“The issues that Claire’s is facing are significant, and we will need to work collaboratively with all interested parties if our proposed rescue plan is to succeed.”

Modella Capital acquired WH Smith’s high street outlets earlier this year and rebranded them TGJones.
