Another late Mikel Merino strike has set up a clash of European heavyweights for the first World Cup semi-final, and France look primed to take revenge after a couple of damaging defeats to Luis de la Fuente’s Spain.
The last time these sides met was a Uefa Nations League semi-final last summer, when a rampant Spain raced to a 4-0 lead before almost throwing it away in a nine-goal thriller in Stuttgart. This came less than a year after La Roja claimed another semi-final win – that time en route to the Euro 2024 title – but France look a more mature outfit this time and will carry an awful lot of confidence into Tuesday’s tie in Texas.
Their deserved 2-0 win over Morocco in the quarter-finals leaves them with 16 goals from six World Cup games and they have rarely needed to break a sweat, with only Paraguay’s shenanigans in the round-of-16 putting their winning run under threat. Of course, Didier Deschamps’ side will face their toughest test to date in Spain, who kept five successive clean sheets before Unai Simon finally let one in against Belgium in the quarter-finals.
Despite the necessity of Merino’s late winner, La Roja were their usual dominant selves in Los Angeles, having over two-thirds possession and limiting the Red Devils to just two shots on target. They have allowed their opponents a total of only seven shots on target this tournament, but they are yet to face an attacking lineup with quality even close to what France possess.
The favourites have generated a tournament-high 27 big chances, registered 110 shots and hit the target 47 times. Unsurprisingly, Kylian Mbappe is foremost among France’s shot-takers. Les Bleus’ captain has tested the goalkeeper 19 times from 30 shots and is aiming to become the first player to win two World Cup Golden Boots.
He has eight goals to his name already and has found the net at least once in five of his six appearances. Mbappe scored in that 5-4 Nations League defeat last time these sides met and, if anybody can trouble this Spain defence, it is the Real Madrid star and his supporting cast of Michael Olise, Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembele.
This star-studded attacking quartet should have enough to see France through to the final, but they may have to dig deep to defeat the European champions. Luis de la Fuente’s side have matched France’s shot-taking record of 110 attempts and have scored 11 goals in their last five games.
France may have shut out their first three knockout-stage opponents, but they conceded against Senegal and a heavily rotated Norway side in the group stages and had conceded in five successive games before the tournament began. Those seeking a bigger profit should consider backing France and both teams to score. However, there is enough value to simply get behind the French, who look set for a third successive World Cup final.
