Dominik Szoboszlai set to sign long-term Liverpool contract extension

Dominik Szoboszlai is set to commit his future to Liverpool by signing a new long-term contract.
There is an outline agreement in place with the Hungary international, following months of negotiations between sporting director Richard Hughes and his representatives.
Retaining the services of Szoboszlai, who has two years remaining on his current deal, is a major boost for new Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola and will end speculation over the player’s future.
The 25-year-old midfielder has grown in stature since joining the club in a £60million move from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2023.
He played a key role in Liverpool winning the Premier League title in 2024-25 and was then their standout performer during a difficult 2025-26 campaign which ended with the sacking of Arne Slot.
Szoboszlai provided 13 goals and 12 assists in 53 appearances in all competitions last season — becoming the first Liverpool midfielder to reach double figures for both goals and assists since Steven Gerrard in 2013-14.
Asked about his future following April’s Merseyside derby win over Everton, he told reporters: “There has been no real progression, so I cannot say anything new about my contract situation.
“As you guys know, my contract ends in 2028, so I am ready to go every day, every week, and then let’s see. Of course I see myself here in the long term, but it is not really in my hands any more. I love being here. I love the fans. My family is happy.”
A huge relief for Liverpool fans
There are still some finer details to iron out but the fact that Szoboszlai is close to penning an extension will be a source of great relief for Liverpool supporters.
With talks over a new deal dragging on through the second half of last season, there was a growing danger that talk about his future would turn into an unwanted side show in 2026-27.
If the impasse had continued through to next summer, he would have been down to his final year and Liverpool would have faced a difficult decision over whether to sell him or risk losing him for nothing in 2028.
With Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate all leaving as free agents at the end of last season, Szoboszlai’s importance has arguably grown, both on and off the pitch, and elevating him into the club’s top bracket of earners makes sense.
Without him, Liverpool would not have salvaged Champions League qualification from a testing campaign as he was consistently their top performer.
He’s firmly established himself as one of the most complete midfielders in the Premier League and at the age of 25 this deal should ensure that he spends his peak years at Anfield.
Szoboszlai, who has captained Hungary for the past three years, is also a leader in the dressing room and with his future sorted that should advance his claims to be appointed as the club’s new vice-captain. The role has been vacant since Robertson’s exit with Alisson the other main contender to be made Virgil van Dijk’s deputy.
