Australia’s Herbert, 8-under thru 12, closing on history at The Open

Lucas Herbert of Australia is closing on making history in the second round of the Open Championship.
Herbert, who entered the day even at shooting 70 on Thursday, is 8-under through 15 holes Friday. The record for the best-ever round at a major is 8-under, set by South African golfer Branden Grace during the third round of the 2017 Open at Royal Birkdale.
Herbert already tied an Open Championship record with a 28 on the front nine at Royal Birkdale Friday. That tied the record set by Denis Durnian in 1983, also at Royal Birkdale.
He has found two more birdies through six holes so far on the back nine.
Herbert currently leads the major thanks to his second-round surge. He was 39th to begin the day.
