Two deaths reported in Texas Hill Country floods, Abbott confirms

KERR COUNTY, Texas — During a media briefing Thursday afternoon, Gov. Greg Abbott said two deaths have been reported so far during flood rescue operations in the Texas Hill Country on Thursday.
Abbott said the first flood victim is a man in Comfort who was swept away in an RV overnight, and the second victim is another man in Uvalde who was swept away while driving on the road.
“So far, there have been two reported deaths because of the flooding. One is a male near Comfort who was swept away in an RV. Another is a male in Uvalde who was swept away while driving on the road. And as far as I know, those are the only deaths that have occurred because of this,” Gov. Abbott said.
Gov. Abbott misspoke and had said that the second victim was a female, but was later corrected to have been a male.
Earlier today, Hector Nieto, a public information officer for Travis County, said STAR Flight crews have been flying rescue missions in Kerr and Gillespie counties as catastrophic flooding continues in the region.

At an earlier unrelated event, Abbott had said the male’s death happened downstream from Kerrville, in the area between Kerrville and Comfort. The Kerr County Sheriff’s Office specified that it happened in the Center Point area.
“This person’s name and information will not be shared until next of kin notifications are complete,” the sheriff’s office said. “Our thoughts are with the family and all those affected by this loss.”
This is a developing story and will be updated.
