Former Lakers star guard not welcome to return to previous NBA team

The Sacramento Kings are not expected to bring back Russell Westbrook for another season.
A return to the Sacramento Kings is seemingly off the table for Russell Westbrook in this year’s offseason.
During his latest updates for Bleacher Report, Jake Fischer was asked if the Kings would like to bring Westbrook back for another year to potentially mentor Darius Acuff Jr. Apparently, the NBA insider dismissed any possibility that Sacramento will look to retain the former NBA star.
“At this point, no disrespect to Russell Westbrook, but I haven’t heard that the Kings would want him back really in any fashion,” Fischer said. “I do believe that Sacramento has 15 full roster spots right now.
“I don’t think they are looking to really move a lot of furniture around to make an opening for Russell Westbrook to come back.”
Russell Westbrook yet to be signed as current free agent after Kings season
Russell Westbrook currently stands as an unrestricted free agent. He notably joined the Sacramento Kings in last year’s offseason, signing a one-year, $3.6 million contract six days before the 2025-26 NBA season opener.
Playing his 18th NBA campaign, Westbrook still managed to deliver a productive season despite the Kings’ brutal 22-win outing, averaging 15.2 points, 6.7 assists, and 5.4 rebounds across 76 appearances.
After drafting Darius Acuff Jr. for the No. 7 pick of this year’s NBA Draft, the Kings are motivated and focused to kickstart a new era. And it appears that reuniting with Westbrook is not on their offseason summer list.
As he remains unsigned in the market, it will be interesting to see what is next for the former NBA MVP.
Westbrook has bounced around six different teams over the past seven years, including a memorable two-year run with the Los Angeles Lakers from 2021 to 2023.
