British Open 2026: Tiger Woods weighs in on the tournament (sort of) with Tommy Fleetwood tweet

Had a few things—OK, a lot of things—gone differently, golf fans could be enjoying Tiger Woods playing in this week’s Open Championship. At a firm and fast Royal Birkdale layout reminiscent of the Hoylake two decades ago when he claimed the claret jug while hitting his driver just one time all week.

But alas, Woods isn’t at the Open. Since a car crash and DUI arrest in March, the 15-time major champ has made only one public appearance, showing up ahead of the Travelers Championship for the PGA Tour’s announcment of planned structural changes. And, of course, there have been plenty of injuries as well.

But it seems Woods was watching Friday’s second-round action. And he took to Twitter to comment on the tournament. Sort of.

“Lookin’ good out there @TommyFleetwood1,” Tiger tweeted.

At the time, Tommy Fleetwood was looking good as he climbed the leaderboard with a couple early birdies, but Woods was actually referring to what the Englishman was wearing. Specifically, the Sun Day Red polo.

Much has been made of Fleetwood not having an apparel deal since his contract with Nike ran out earlier this year. And he sold his hat rights to global investment firm Blackstone ahead of the Masters.

The reigning Tour Championship winner has been wearing a lot of clothing from tournament venues, and considering he didn’t wear Sun Day Red on Thursday, it doesn’t seem like he’s being sponsored by Woods’ clothing brand like fellow PGA Tour pro Karl Vilips.

In any event, at least for Friday, Fleetwood was a Sun Day Red guy. And he had arguably the greatest golfer ever rooting for him.

Is it the British Open or the Open Championship? The name of the final men’s major of the golf season is a subject of continued discussion. The event’s official name, as explained in this op-ed by former R&A chairman Ian Pattinson, is the Open Championship. But since many United States golf fans continue to refer to it as the British Open, and search news around the event accordingly, Golf Digest continues to utilize both names in its coverage.
