Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has just been released, his first feature film since the huge cinematic hit Oppenheimer in the summer of 2023. It follows the trend of the director releasing one film every three years, one that has been in place since 2014’s Interstellar.
But now that his star-studded Greek epic is finally out there, Nolan thinks that his next film — whatever that may be — might be the one to break that 12-year, five-film trend.
Speaking to Today, Nolan said that it will be “Oh, at least” three years before his next film.

Is that because Nolan’s got something even bigger than The Odyssey — which is the first film shot entirely in IMAX and boasts an absolutely star-studded cast — or because he’s absolutely knackered?
“I definitely hit the limits of my own stamina and everybody’s stamina, I think,” he said.
“I mean, it’s The Odyssey, of course it should be difficult. We’re not doing the job right making a film of The Odyssey if it doesn’t seem difficult.”
He also stated that Matt Damon “didn’t really understand until we got on the boat” just how difficult it would, but had “a sort of slow creeping realisation” that it was “not going to be easy”.

In Digital Spy‘s 5-star review of The Odyssey, we called it “a staggering cinematic experience where each set piece brings something new to the feast” but also noted that the film “sees him stretch his horror muscles like never before”.
“While The Odyssey is absolutely an epic that makes the most of the spectacle and range of the IMAX film cameras, the final act tightens the focus and puts the movie on a more intimate level.”
