Marc Guehi speaks perfect Spanish with Lionel Messi, reignites Real Madrid and Barcelona rumors

One of the most anticipated World Cup knockout matches has come and gone. In the end, Argentina got the better of England. Despite England going up 1-0, Lionel Messi and Argentina once again showed that they laugh in the face of adversity.
Messi once again proved vital. He provided both of the assists on Argentina’s two goals, leading his nation to a third World Cup final within the last four editions of the tournament. There were some flare-ups during the game between Messi and some England players, particularly Jude Bellingham, but after the game it was pure respect from and for the Argentina captain.

One particular moment stood out more than others to fans. While Messi was speaking with Argentinian reporters in the media mix zone, England center back Marc Guehi came up behind him and delivered a line perfectly in Spanish: Guehi wished him luck for the final, and Messi responded by thanking him and saying we’ll see each other again.
Guehi doesn’t appear to have any Spanish background or links, so it’s possible he has simply been learning the language on the side. That could be for a competitive purpose on the pitch, in order to expand his speaking abilities, or to potentially get ready for a move to LaLiga.

Real Madrid and FC Barcelona fans might remember that Guehi had been part of rumors linking him to both sides. Atletico Madrid were also linked to Guehi. The rumors surfaced near the end of 2025. Ultimately, the rumors didn’t amount to anything, and Guehi ended up joining Manchester City in January of this year. Guehi is a starter at Man City and would surely like to stay there for a while, but he may be persuaded to leave for Spain eventually.
A report from The Sun last September claimed that Guehi’s “top choice is to move to the Spanish giants“, and that “he is excited by the prospect of playing for Real Madrid and has been encouraged by their interest“. It won’t happen anytime soon, as he’s just moved to Manchester City, but it sounds like playing in Spain is high on Guehi’s bucket list for the future.
