Rabat – Lamine Yamal’s father, Munir Nasraoui, has revealed that a medical condition is preventing him from traveling to the United States to watch his son’s historic 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in person.
While Yamal has been supported in the stands by his mother, younger brother, and girlfriend throughout the tournament, Nasraoui has remained at home due to health concerns.
A risky trip
Speaking to Spanish television channel Antena 3, Nasraoui explained that he suffers from epilepsy and takes medication every day, making the long trip to the United States too risky.
“I think Los Angeles is around 18,000 kilometers away from us, and it’s very difficult not to be there,” he said. “But I have epilepsy and take a lot of medication every day.”
He added that the emotional intensity of the tournament could trigger a seizure.
“Sometimes I have epileptic seizures. Here I can stay calm, but over there the stress and emotions could cause an episode. I don’t want to create problems, so it’s better that I stay home and watch the match on television.”
Proud and grateful
Despite missing Spain’s matches in person, Nasraoui said he is immensely proud of his son’s achievements.
“I’m very proud and grateful for what Spain has achieved,” he said. “I’m happy for my son and for all the players who have done a fantastic job.”
He also revealed an emotional phone conversation with Yamal after Spain reached the final.
“Lamine called me and told me he was proud of me. I told him that I’m even more proud of him. Thank you to everyone who has helped him throughout his journey.”
Yamal, who recently celebrated his 19th birthday, has made seven appearances for Spain at the 2026 World Cup, scoring one goal and providing one assist.
Spain will face Argentina in the World Cup final on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, with Yamal aiming to help La Roja lift their second World Cup title.
