Three men have been arrested on suspicion of drugs-related offences following the death of a 25-year-old man near to the Royal Welsh showground.
Police said he died despite the efforts of paramedics called to Penmaenau Farm campsite at Llanelwedd in Powys, on Saturday night.
Temporary Chief Supt Steve Davies said it was a “tragic incident, and our thoughts remain with the young man’s family at this difficult time”.
Wales’ biggest annual agricultural festival, the Royal Welsh Show, is due to get under way on Monday.
A spokesperson for the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society said they would support police “as their enquiries continue”.
“I would like to reassure the public that this is an isolated incident and the death is currently being treated as unexplained,” said Davies.
“There is no evidence of any ongoing risk to the wider public in connection with this sad incident.”
Following the death, three men remain in custody.
A spokesperson for the campsite said: “It is with sadness that we confirm an individual sadly passed away yesterday following a medical emergency on site.
“The Penmaenau family would like to extend our sincere condolences to the individual’s family, friends and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.”
Llyr Gruffydd, rural affairs and sustainability minister, offered his condolences to the man’s family and friends.
Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, he said: “It is important not to speculate what has happened and to remember that police investigations are on going.
“As a parent of children who are staying in the show this week it reminds us of the importance of thinking about others and looking after each other,” he added.
