Kelvin Fletcher has shared how life on the family farm gives his children a kind of “freedom” they might not get elsewhere, and it’s allowed him and wife Liz to impose a ban at home that may be tricky for other parents to stick to.
The 2019 Strictly Come Dancing champion has traded the drama of Emmerdale for muddy boots and early mornings, with the actor now fronting ITV’s Fletchers’ Family Farm. The show charts life at the family’s 120-acre farm near Macclesfield, Cheshire, as they tackle the realities of running it day to day.
Kelvin and Liz have four children — Marnie, Milo and twins Mateusz and Maximus — and he suggested the youngsters have settled into the countryside pace. In his view, one key positive for them is the “freedom” that comes with living in wide-open space, away from the usual restrictions of town life.
He spoke about it while being interviewed for local station Cheshire’s Mix 56, posted on the broadcaster’s Facebook page. During the chat, Kelvin was asked whether the children had adapted to farm living and what they enjoy most about being there.
He said: “Oh, the kids just love that sense of freedom, the space to run out, explore. You won’t see any gadgets or tablets in our house.”

When the interviewer suggested that restricting the use of devices at home is “really important”, Kelvin agreed: “I think personally for me, as a family, yeah, that’s something we really, you know, try and….it’s a bit of a stickler for us. But, you know, obviously, each to their own.
“But for us as a family, it works and obviously, we’ve got the luxury of having that space right outside. So yeah, if, come rain or shine, it’s kids out.
“Go and explore and go and figure it out just like I did when I was a kid.”
It comes after Liz addressed an “emotional” thought about what lies ahead for the farm. Speaking on The Farmer’s Guardian podcast, she said the couple “can’t wait” to see how their children will leave their mark on it in the years to come.
“What are they gonna do with the farm? That’s why I can’t wait. The thought of passing the farm down to them. What are they gonna do?”

“I’m like, ‘Look, you can be whatever you want. You don’t have to be farmers’, as Kelvin’s a bit like, ‘You’re gonna be farmers’. But I can’t wait to see what they do. And I hope that they can create something or do something here that makes them happy.”
During the chat, host Emily Ashworth pointed out that farming can create a “legacy” that’s passed from one generation to the next, dubbing it an “emotional thought”. Liz agreed, replying that their children are “learning from us now”.
She continued: “It is, yeah, coz they’re learning from us now. And the thought of them taking into account what we do now, and maybe applying it and then putting their own touch on it.
“You know, I hope that when we’re older… I mean, who knows where we’ll be in 10, 20 years’ time. But I hope that they have the strength and the knowledge to apply what they need to apply to fit in the world that they’re in at that time. And they can change things up.”
