New tariffs due to U.S. alcohol bans
Another proclamation addressed Canada’s imports of U.S. alcohol.
The proclamation mentions the fact that a number of provinces took American booze off their shelves earlier in the trade war. In some places, like Ontario, U.S. alcohol remains unavailable.
Trump says that taking only U.S. alcohol off of shelves has benefited other countries that haven’t had the same restrictions while hurting the U.S.
As a result, the president put 50 per cent tariffs on a number of alcohol products, including beer, wine and cider — as well as a number of paper and wood products, and ice hockey equipment.
He says these tariffs will help expand opportunities for producers within the U.S. market and that this could “spur Canada to remove the unreasonable and unequal imposition” on U.S. alcohol.
