Joey Ortiz puts it out of reach
Two pitches following the removal of Peralta, Joey Ortiz smoked a three-run shot inside the line to left and in the process hung the sixth and seventh runs of the day on the Mets right-hander’s final line like a line of Christmas lights.
The Brewers lit up Peralta in bright colors, posting seven runs on him across 5 1/3 innings on eight hits and two walks. Prior to joining the Mets in January, Peralta hadn’t allowed seven earned runs in a game since 2019 and had only done it three times in his career. He’s not done so twice in his last six starts.
Ortiz, meanwhile, has been on a tear. Over his last 20 games, his OPS is .894 with four homers and 11 driven in.
Lance McCullers Jr. makes Brewers debut
After going unused out of the bullpen in his first series with the team, Lance McCullers Jr. got his first call for the sixth inning against the Mets. The first impression was a strong one, too: A 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout and two grounders.
Jacob Misiorowski’s night done after four innings
After Pat Murphy spent part of his pregame media session discussing how the Brewers were going to monitor Misiorowski’s workload following a two-week layoff and moving forward, the team limited him to four innings of work and 64 pitches.
“I think we lean more toward [shorter outings],” Murphy said. “Keep the consistency. When you have a natural break like we just did, kept him out of the Pittsburgh game 3, kept him out of the first series [out of the break]. We take that as kind of a reset. I think we have to build him back up.”
Misiorowski, for his part, showed no signs of the fatigue that the Brewers said kept him out of the final start of the first half in Pittsburgh. He averaged 101.2 mph with his fastball and got 12 whiffs on 21 swings against it while topping out at 103.8 mph.
New York’s lone run against Misiorowski was unearned due to an Andrew Vaughn error in the third inning.
Andrew Vaughn makes it 5-1
The Brewers are full-on pummeling Peralta.
After Peralta recorded the first two batters in the third, Milwaukee attacked early in the count to put another two runs on the board and push its lead to 5-1. Garrett Mitchell sliced an 0-1 fastball down in the zone for his 11th extra-base hit of July and one pitch later Andrew Vaughn hit his first homer since June 8 by punishing a gift-wrapped first pitch heater to left-center.
Cooper Pratt gets his first
A 1-0 sweeper provided the setup for Cooper Pratt’s first big-league home run, and against a pitcher he shared a big-league clubhouse with in spring training.
Peralta sent the hanger 393 feet to the home bullpen in left-center, the ball carrying and carrying through the air like it was seemingly destined to be the one to provide Pratt with an unforgettable moment.
Pratt hit 22 minor-league homers across 286 games through his first four years as a pro and had only four extra-base hits through 97 MLB plate appearances before the drive to put the Brewers ahead, 3-0.
Brewers plate a pair in inconsistent first for Freddy Peralta
About 20 minutes after honoring him with a pregame video, the Brewers tagged Freddy Peralta for a pair of runs in the first inning.
It featured some of the frustrating Peralta tendencies that would pop up from time to time throughout his Brewers tenure. First, a four-pitch walk to Jackson Chourio put a runner on with one out, then Brice Turang battled back from a 1-2 count for a RBI double to right.
Garrett Mitchell continued his torrid ways with a two-out RBI single through the right side before Peralta ultimately escaped after 24 pitches and 12 strikes.
