The LA Galaxy have signed Japanese striker Kyōgo Furuhashi from Birmingham City, multiple sources briefed on the deal told The Athletic.
Kyōgo scored 63 goals at Celtic in the Scottish Premiership, including 27 in the 2022-23 season, which led the league. The Japanese international moved to Birmingham last summer for around €9 million, but managed just one goal in 28 appearances in the English Championship.
The 5-foot-7 striker is set to join the Galaxy immediately. Kyōgo will not require a designated player spot, sources said.
The Galaxy’s leading scorer is João Klauss, who had five goals before an injury forced him out of the lineup in April. He was expected to return shortly after the World Cup break.
Kyōgo, who has 23 caps for Japan but was not on its 26-man 2026 World Cup squad, had 42 goals for Vissel Kobe in the J1 League before moving to Celtic in 2021-22. Now he’ll look to find his form again in L.A. with a Galaxy team that recently sold winger Gabriel Pec to Cruzeiro for a club-record fee of $12 million plus another $1.5 million in add-ons. The Galaxy currently sits in ninth place in the Western Conference and returns to play on Wednesday night against St. Louis City SC.
