With the NBA world on edge in anticipation of LeBron James’ impending free agent decision, a mistake by the Miami Heat’s social media department sent social media into a frenzy on Tuesday night.
When one user noticed a video titled “LeBron James Introductory Press Conference | July 27, 2026” posted by the Heat’s YouTube account, the link to that thumbnail spread on X. The conspiracies of the Heat mistakenly leaking James’ decision to return to Miami also picked up steam, and the Heat simultaneously skyrocketed on the Polymarket and Kalshi prediction market platforms as James’ next team.
But according to a Heat spokesperson, the “LeBron James Introductory Press Conference | July 27, 2026” video was mistakenly made public by the Heat’s social media department while preparing for the possibility of James eventually deciding to join the Heat this offseason. The Heat spokesperson said there is currently no validity to the video.
For those questioning why there was a specific date for the press conference in the title of the video, James has historically not informed his new team of his intentions to sign with them until a few minutes before the news became public. James’ camp informed the Heat he was coming to Miami just minutes before he announced his decision on ESPN in 2010.
James, who spent the past eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, is seriously considering the Heat in free agency this summer. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers and the Philadelphia 76ers are the three front-runners to land James.
James, 41, is still weighting his options in free agency three weeks after leaguewide negotiations were allowed to begin on June 30.
“I don’t know when his choice is going to be made,” James’ agent and Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul said during a Monday appearance on “Game Over with Max Kellerman and Rich Paul.” “It could be 48 seconds, it could be 48 minutes, I don’t know. Again, you can’t make somebody know something they don’t know.”
James already spent four seasons with the Heat from 2010 to 2014 and winning NBA championships with the organization in 2012 and 2013 across four NBA Finals appearances. The four-time NBA MVP also was selected as the league’s MVP two times while with the Heat.
With 12 players currently signed to standard contracts for next season, the Heat has two to three standard roster spots left to fill. Miami has already made one big addition this summer in trading for two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The Heat has just about $6.5 million left of its midlevel exception or a minimum contract to offer James since it is hard-capped at the first apron because of the blockbuster trade that landed Antetokounmpo. The Heat could create more room under the first apron to offer James the entire $8.5 million it has left of its midlevel exception by shedding money in a trade.
Even at 41, James remains a very effective player. He averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists per game while shooting 51.5% from the field and 31.7% on threes in 60 appearances for the Lakers last season.
