Sony FX5 Announced – Full-Frame 5K Open Gate, Internal X-OCN RAW, Three Base ISOs, 4K 240p

Sony has unveiled the FX5, a new full-frame Cinema Line camera that slots in between the FX3 and the FX6 and brings features previously reserved for the VENICE 2 and BURANO into a compact body. Headline specs include a newly developed 16.6MP fully stacked sensor, 5K open gate recording, internal 16-bit X-OCN RAW with two new compression flavors, three base ISOs, and 4K at up to 240 frames per second.
Five years after the original FX3 redefined what a compact cinema camera could be, and just over a year after the quiet FX3a refresh, Sony is finally giving accomplished FX3 shooters somewhere to go. Importantly, the company stresses that this is not an FX3 Mark II. The FX5 is a new model with its own positioning, built around what Sony describes as four pillars: a renewed imaging system, exceptional image quality, professional operability, and expandability paired with reliability. Under the launch motto “Lighting the Way Forward,” nearly every major component has been updated compared to the FX3, so let’s dig into what that actually means in practice.
A new sensor and processor at the core
At the heart of the FX5 sits a newly developed 16.6MP full-frame back-illuminated, fully stacked CMOS sensor, paired with the BIONZ XR2 processor that Sony introduced with the recently released Alpha 7R VI. The BIONZ XR2 integrates the AI processing unit that previously lived on a separate chip in earlier Alpha bodies, which, according to Sony, frees up processing headroom for image quality, autofocus, and audio alike.
The stacked architecture is significant for this class of camera. The FX3’s sensor was not stacked, so readout speed, and with it rolling shutter performance, should see a meaningful improvement. Sony did not share concrete readout figures during the briefing, so this is something we look forward to verifying in our lab test. The pixel count is also worth pausing on: 16.6MP is a deliberate choice that yields native 5K from the full sensor width, prioritizing sensitivity and readout speed over resolution headroom, very much in the FX3 tradition rather than the oversampling approach of the FX2.
5K open gate comes to the compact Cinema Line
For the first time in a Sony camera of this form factor, the FX5 offers open gate recording, a capability that so far lived at the VENICE end of the lineup. The full sensor can be captured in 5K at a 3:2 aspect ratio, which maximizes image quality with anamorphic lenses and allows vertical or reframed extractions in post without quality loss. According to Sony, the open gate implementation covers a wider range of anamorphic squeeze ratios than both the FX3 and the FX2, so existing anamorphic glass should work without restrictions.
The full list of imager modes is extensive: open gate 5K 3:2, full-frame 5K in both 17:9 and 16:9, full-frame crop modes at 4.5K (17:9 and 16:9) and 3.8K (16:9), and a Super 35 3.2K 16:9 mode. Codec coverage varies by mode. The X-OCN RAW flavors are available in the open gate, both full-frame 5K modes, and the 3.8K crop, while XAVC S-I spans nearly the entire range including the 4.5K crops and Super 35. Long-GOP XAVC HS and XAVC S options in 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 round out the matrix for more compact deliveries. Sony says a complete format table will be communicated alongside the launch, and we will include it in our upcoming coverage.
Internal X-OCN RAW with two new compression flavors
Perhaps the biggest workflow story here is internal RAW. So far, 16-bit X-OCN recording was the domain of the VENICE 2 and BURANO; FX3 owners had to strap on an external recorder to capture RAW at all. The FX5 records X-OCN internally, which means smaller rigs, less weight, and fewer overheating concerns from stacked accessories.
Alongside the established X-OCN LT, Sony has developed two new, more aggressive compression flavors that debut on this camera: X-OCN C1 and X-OCN C2, with the C standing for Compact. The C1 comes in at roughly 80% of the LT file size, while the C2 shrinks that further to about 75% of the C1. To put numbers on it, Sony showed a theoretical bitrate comparison at 4K 24p in which X-OCN LT sits around 389 Mbps, the new C1 at roughly 289 Mbps, and the C2 at approximately 232 Mbps, which is actually below the circa 240 Mbps of XAVC S-I on the FX3. Sony labels these as simulated values, since the FX5 records 4.5K or 5K rather than exactly 4K, but the direction is clear: 16-bit RAW at bitrates lower than the FX3’s intraframe compressed codec. Of course, 16-bit X-OCN will also offer greater grading flexibility than 10-bit or 12-bit ProRes formats, which we should see in the Lab Test results once we get access to a production version of the camera.
If those claims hold up, this could finally make an internal RAW workflow practical for independent freelancers and small production houses without massive storage infrastructure, at a time when memory and server costs keep climbing. There is a catch for early adopters: the new C1 and C2 flavors are not yet supported in editing applications, so Sony will initially provide a beta of its RAW Viewer software (based on version 5.0) for playback and evaluation, with NLE support to follow. Recording happens to dual CFexpress Type A card slots, and Sony guarantees X-OCN operation only with the latest CFexpress Type A VPG400 cards, although recording on other media remains possible.
Dynamic range, dual gain, and three base ISOs
Sony claims 15+ stops of latitude for the FX5, keeping information in both highlights and shadows. On top of that, the camera inherits the dual gain function from the VENICE 2 and BURANO, which also recently appeared on the Alpha 7R VI. The feature performs a double readout of the sensor and combines both reads to cancel out random noise, resulting in cleaner shadows and, according to Sony, expanded usable dynamic range in the dark areas of the image.
Dual gain comes with a defined set of limitations. When shooting in Log, the base ISO is fixed at 800 with a maximum Exposure Index of 3200. In Custom mode, base sensitivity is fixed to Low with a maximum of ISO 2500. The maximum frame rate with dual gain enabled is 30p in the 5K 3:2 open gate mode and 60p in all other modes, and the function is not available in Full HD or in the 4.5K and 3.8K full-frame crop modes. These are reasonable trade-offs for what is essentially a noise-canceling double exposure at the sensor level, but they are worth knowing before building a workflow around it.
The sensitivity story is equally interesting. The FX5 offers three base ISOs at 800, 4,000, and 12,800. Sony is careful to point out that this is not a “triple base ISO” in marketing terms but rather three distinct base sensitivities with slightly different noise levels, conceptually similar to the two base ISOs of the FX3 and FX6. The comparison with its siblings is telling: the FX2 offers 800 and 4,000, the FX3a offers 800 and 12,800, and the FX5 combines all three. The new middle value of ISO 4,000 fills a gap many filmmakers had been asking for, particularly in mixed lighting where 800 is too slow and 12,800 unnecessarily noisy.

Slow motion up to 4K 240p
High frame rates are another first for this form factor. The FX5 records 5K at up to 120 frames per second, including in open gate, which at a 23.98 project frame rate translates to 5x slow motion at full quality. Even more striking is 4K at up to 240 frames per second for 10x slow motion, captured in the 3.8K full-frame crop mode. Both headline slow motion modes are tied to the X-OCN C2 codec, so the most compressed RAW flavor is also the gateway to the camera’s fastest capture.
Not all of this is available on day one, though. Sony has confirmed a staged rollout: at launch, firmware version 1 covers the core recording modes, while firmware version 2 adds 5K open gate at 120p, open gate recording in XAVC, full-frame 5K RAW at up to 120p, and the 4K 240p mode. Sony says it will communicate the version 2 timing at a later date. Judging by how consistently the company has delivered on its BURANO and FX6 firmware roadmaps, we would expect these features to arrive as promised, but buyers planning productions around 240p should factor the wait into their decision.
A familiar body running a VENICE-style workflow
Put the FX5 next to an FX3 and you would struggle to tell them apart at a distance. The body measures 132.3 x 79.0 x 86.95mm / 5.21 x 3.11 x 3.42in, which works out to just 2.6mm more width, 2mm more thickness, and about 1.2mm more height than the FX3a, with a slightly deeper and more comfortable grip. Weight is provisionally listed at 750 grams / 1.65lb including battery and card, roughly 35 grams more than the FX3a. The tally lamp remains on board.
Underneath, however, the operating concept has changed fundamentally, and this is the clearest sign of who this camera is for. The rear control wheel of the FX3 is gone, replaced by a multifunction dial inherited from the VENICE 2 that can be rotated and clicked to drive the camera. New clips, back, home, and user buttons join up to six customizable buttons on the body. Most importantly, Sony has abandoned the Alpha-derived menu system entirely. The FX5 runs the professional menu structure familiar from the FX6, VENICE 2, and BURANO, including the BIG6 home screen that recently came to the FX6 via firmware version 6.00. Pressing home brings up the BIG6 overview from anywhere, the menu button toggles between shooting and menu screens, and holding it opens the full menu with every setting exposed. For crews already operating Sony’s higher-end cinema cameras, or using the FX5 as a secondary body next to a VENICE 2, the interface should feel immediately familiar, though FX3 upgraders will face a genuine learning curve.
The LCD has grown as well: a wider, brighter 3.5-inch 16:9 panel on Sony’s four-axis multi-angle mechanism, replacing the 3.0-inch 4:3 vari-angle screen of the FX3a. An OSD black mode pushes all settings into slim black bars at the edges of the frame for an unobstructed view of the image while monitoring. Exposure tools finally get a proper cinema camera treatment on a body of this size. False color is available natively and mapped to the C4 button out of the box, joined by newly added waveform, vectorscope, and focus map displays alongside the existing histogram, zebras, and peaking.
Autofocus, stabilization, and stamina
The autofocus benefits from the BIONZ XR2’s integrated AI unit and now recognizes birds in addition to humans and animals, which documentary and wildlife shooters will appreciate. According to Sony, advancements in the imager have specifically enhanced autofocus performance in low-light conditions, for example when shooting at ISO 12,800, and in the demonstration footage shown during the briefing, the FX5 acquired and held subjects noticeably faster than the FX3 beside it.
In-body stabilization has been updated as well. A precision stabilization unit and gyro sensors provide optical 5-axis stabilization, and Sony states that the rotational operating range of the unit has been doubled, bringing performance to the level of the Alpha 7R VI. Both the standard active mode and the dynamic active mode are on board, the latter trading a small crop for considerably smoother handheld footage. Sony deliberately avoids quoting a stops figure for video stabilization, but the side-by-side clips against the FX3 showed a clearly steadier image.
Power comes from the new NP-SA100 battery introduced with the Alpha 7R VI, which Sony says delivers a stamina boost of roughly 30% over the previous generation. In practical terms, the company quotes around 170 minutes of continuous 5K 30p recording on a single charge.
Connectivity, media, and streaming
Physical connectivity covers the professional bases: microphone input, headphone output, two USB-C ports that are faster than the FX3’s, a full-size HDMI Type A output, and an Ethernet port for high-volume data transfer and remote recording workflows. Live streaming is supported at up to 4K 60p.
Wireless support steps up to 6GHz Wi-Fi, which Sony says transfers data considerably faster and maintains a stronger, lower-latency connection to its Monitor & Control app. That matters in practice because the app allows touch focus pulling and exposure checking with waveform, false color, zebra, and histogram tools directly from a smartphone or tablet, and any latency or dropout in that link is felt immediately on set. Sony also lists enhanced network security features for the camera, an increasingly relevant checkbox for broadcast and corporate environments.
Rigging users should note one practical consequence of the new body: the accessory screw holes are positioned differently than on the FX3, so existing FX3 cages and rigs will not fit and accessory makers will need to tool up for the new model. On the positive side, the FX5 adopts two 1/4-20 tripod sockets on the bottom, as on the FX2, for a more secure and twist-free connection to plates and baseplates.
Three new accessories and a permanent sensor lock service
The FX5 launches alongside three dedicated accessories. First, an optional OLED electronic viewfinder attaches and detaches freely, unlike the fixed EVF of the FX2, and tilts from 0 to 90 degrees. It houses a roughly 3.7-million-dot 10-bit OLED panel that Sony says is bright and color-accurate enough for critical focus and exposure judgment, with a newly designed eyecup to isolate the operator’s eye even in harsh sunlight. It is priced at €750.
Second, a newly developed XLR handle unit brings 96kHz sampling for higher sound fidelity and, arguably the star feature, 32-bit float audio recording, taking gain anxiety out of run-and-gun sound work and letting operators concentrate on the image. It comes in at €900 when purchased separately. One compatibility note: due to the different screw positions, the existing XLR-H1 handle from the FX3 cannot be attached to the FX5. Third, a new TC cable, priced at €100, enables timecode synchronization across multi-camera setups, for example alongside FX6 units in broadcast or documentary fleets, saving considerable alignment time in post.
One announcement stands out as genuinely unusual: Sony will offer a paid service to permanently lock the FX5’s sensor. High-end productions rigging cameras to cars or drones sometimes find that in-body stabilization interacts badly with high-frequency external vibration, producing unnatural shaking in the footage. Through the service, users send their camera to a Sony service center where the stabilization unit is fixed in place. The procedure is irreversible; once locked, the camera receives a label on the bottom and all stabilization options are permanently grayed out in the menu. Sony says the launch timing and target regions for this service are still to be determined. It is a niche offering, but it speaks volumes about the crash cam and B-camera roles Sony envisions for this body.
Where the FX5 sits in the Cinema Line
Sony positions the FX5 squarely between the FX3 and the FX6, and explicitly not as a replacement for either. The FX6 keeps its unique selling points, namely the built-in electronic variable ND filter, SDI connectivity, and a box-style body that is easier to operate as part of a crew, making it, in Sony’s framing, the best option for crew work, media, and live production. The FX3 shifts toward what the company calls the perfect creator camera and the entry door to the Cinema Line.
The FX5’s own selling points are the open gate, internal X-OCN, three base ISOs, and the 5K 120p and 4K 240p frame rates. Sony’s primary target is filmmakers and production houses working in commercial, music, event, and online entertainment production who have outgrown the FX3, with a clear upgrade path for advanced FX3 operators. The secondary targets are just as revealing: the cinema industry, where the FX5 can serve as a B or C camera next to a BURANO or VENICE, or as a crash cam on vehicles and drones that does not compromise image quality; documentary crews for whom a BURANO is too cumbersome to carry through mountains and jungles; and broadcasters who value portability and, with the new TC cable, painless multi-camera sync.
The Sony FX5 is priced at $4,898 / €4,600 (net) for the body only, or $5,500 / €5,132 in a kit with the XLR handle unit. According to Sony, sales are planned to start in August 2026. More information is available on the Sony Cinema Line website.
