CHICAGO — An Albany Park man is being charged with attempted murder in the shooting of a Chicago police SWAT officer and a 67-year-old woman Monday in Albany Park.
Daniel Aguirre, of the 4600 block of North Springfield Avenue, was charged with six felonies, including attempted murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated battery using a deadly weapon, aggravated unlawful restraint, aggravated assault of a peace officer and aggravated discharge of a firearm at an occupied building, according to a police news release.
Aguirre, 42, was arrested at 1:14 p.m. Monday, two hours after he shot the 67-year-old woman and held a 14-year-old girl and a 42-year-old woman at gunpoint inside a home on the block, according to police.
A SWAT officer responding to the scene was shot in his abdomen, police said. He is expected to make a full recovery, officials said.
The 67-year-old woman was shot in the face and was in critical condition Monday, according to police and an incident report.
Police were still trying to determine the relationship between all the people involved in the incident, officials said at a press conference Monday outside the hospital where the officer was treated.
Around 11 a.m. Monday, police received a call of a shooting on the block.
When they arrived, “officers found an older female who was shot,” interim Police Supt. Fred Waller said at Monday’s press conference. Officers gave the woman CPR and first aid and summoned an ambulance, Waller said.
They then discovered a man was holding a girl and another woman hostage inside a home on the block, and they called a SWAT team, Waller said.
When the SWAT team tried to “breach that door” of the home, Waller said, the “offender fired through the door and … struck the SWAT officer in the lower abdomen.” A source said he was struck by two bullets, although Waller said they were still investigating the angle of the bullet and whether it came through a door or a wall.
Police continued to negotiate with the man, and “he subsequently released the two females who were battered,” Waller said. After more negotiations, the man surrendered. Officers did not fire any shots.
The 67-year-old woman shot was believed to be the mother of the woman inside, who is believed to be the mother of the teen girl, Waller said. The woman inside was likely the girlfriend of the man involved, Waller said.
Aguirre is scheduled to appear at a detention hearing Wednesday.
