Derby County told to complete ‘great’ transfer for free agent goal machine

Kevin Phillips believes James Tavernier would be a “great signing” for Derby County as the former Rangers defender continues his search for a new club.

Tavernier is currently a free agent and was linked with Derby earlier in the summer amid growing speculation he will move south of the border.

The 34-year-old was skipper of Rangers where his astonishing goals record catapulted him to fifth in the list of the world’s all time highest scoring defenders.

He scored more than 100 goals for Rangers from full-back and has understandably attracted interest despite the fact he is heading into the twilight years of his career.

And former Derby coach Phillips believes he would be a terrific acquisition for the Rams particularly if they can also re-sign Ben Brereton Diaz.

“I think Tavernier would be a great signing,” Phillips told bestbettingsites.co.uk.

“I know he’s 34 years of age, but he looks after himself, he had a fantastic career up at Rangers, and the biggest thing that stands out, you mentioned the right-hand side, he scored over 150 goals in his career as a fullback, which is astonishing.

“Potentially pairing him with Brereton Diaz, if he signs, down that right-hand side, there’s going to be a supply line, there’s going to be goals, and I think Derby, that could be one of those teams that could really surprise people this season if they were to secure the services of James with the backing, the investment.

“I think they could really challenge next season. So yeah, I think it’d be a fantastic signing for Derby, for sure.”
