The Columbus Blue Jackets and goaltender Jet Greaves avoided arbitration on Thursday, solidifying his standing as the club’s unquestioned starter by agreeing to a three-year contract annually worth $5 million, general manager Don Waddell said.
Greaves, 25, was a restricted free agent after a breakout season, his first in the NHL. In 55 games, Greaves went 26-19-9 with a .908 save percentage and 2.60 goals-against average, emerging as coach Rick Bowness’ go-to guy in the second half of the season.
“Jet is a high-character, talented and athletic goaltender who has become an important part of our hockey club,” Waddell said in a statement. “Our intent always was to get a deal done to ensure he remains a Blue Jacket and we are thrilled that we were able to do so.”
The $5 million yearly cap hit represents a big pay jump for Greaves, who made $825,000 last season, barely above the NHL minimum.
The two sides had been scheduled for arbitration on Thursday in Toronto before coming to terms on their own. The Blue Jackets, who requested a one-year ruling, sought a $2.8 million salary, while Greaves, through his agent, Pat Brisson, requested a $7.5 million ruling.
The midpoint between those two requests is $5.15 million.
Greaves was undrafted out of the junior ranks, but came to the Blue Jackets’ rookie camp in Traverse City, Mich., in 2021, as a free-agent invite. He later signed a minor-league contract with the Blue Jackets and signed an NHL deal one year later.
In 76 NHL games, he has a 36-28-11 record with a .913 save percentage and a 2.61 goals-against average.
