UPPER WEST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) — A person of interest is in custody after two men were stabbed on the Upper West Side on Thursday afternoon — and police sources believe the attacks were random.
The stabbings began at 84th and Central Park West where a 57-year-old was stabbed in the torso around 1:30 p.m.
The second stabbing, of a 50-year-old man, occurred at 86th and Amsterdam near a church and a synagogue.
Both victims were taken to the hospital.
One victim was initially listed in critical condition, but now both victims are expected to be OK.
A short time later police took a person of interest into custody at an apartment building a couple blocks away from the second stabbing scene.
The man has not been charged yet, but he is being interviewed by detectives.
Police are looking into whether the suspect used a blade and a screwdriver in the attack.
Council Speaker Julie Menin released a statement in response to the stabbings that said in part, “I am absolutely sickened and furious by what appears to be an antisemitic stabbing on the Upper West Side. While we await additional details to be confirmed, we know that what is happening in our city is abhorrent.”
Police have not yet said they are investigating the stabbings as hate crimes. They are still investigating the motive but investigators do believe the attacks were unprovoked.
