Just a year after one of Toronto’s newest parks first opened to the public, Biidaasige Park is being expanded on Friday to include 10 more acres.

The expansion to the western side of the Port Lands area park includes:

  • Canoe Cove, a launch point to connect visitors directly with Lake Ontario and the revitalized Don River.
  • A new waterfront walkway with city skyline views.
  • A lawn space for events with up to 3,000 people.
  • A 115-metre tall crane to mark the area’s industrial history.

Mayor Olivia Chow and other speakers will be attending a news conference Friday morning to officially launch the new additions.

Residents hoping to check out the park’s newest amenities will also be able to participate in several free family-friendly events over the weekend, such as guided walking tours, kayaking, paddle boarding and art workshops.

WATCH | Expert weighed in last year on the health of the Don River:

Is the Don River healthy?

The Don River has been redirected as part of a years-long revitalization of the Port Lands — but is the water healthy? Metro Morning spoke to the Aquatic Monitoring and Management to find out.

The park first opened on July 18 last year to unveil off-leash dog areas, cycling trails, a playground with a massive snowy owl and more.

The Don River has a history of being highly polluted with industrial waste to sewage pollution. In 2017, the federal government announced $1.25 billion in funding to rehabilitate the river and by extension enabled the redevelopment of the Port Lands.
