Canadian swimmers were back in the pool Saturday, competing in heats on Day 2 of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Josh Liendo qualified for a pair of semifinals at Tollcross International Swimming Centre. The Toronto native led all swimmers in the men’s 50m freestyle heats, finishing in 21.80 seconds. Montreal’s Antoine Sauve (22.80) also qualified for the 50m free semis, which will be held later Saturday.

Sophie Angus also qualified for the semis in the women’s 100m breaststroke, swimming to a time of 1:07.09 in her heat.
In the women’s 200m freestyle heats, Ella Jansen qualified for Saturday’s final with a time of 1:59.16.
Para swimmer Emma Van Dyk, of Hamilton, finished seventh in the women’s 200m freestyle S14 heat and will race in the final later Saturday.

Ofori advances to round of 16
Canadian boxer Joshua Ofori got off to a lightning-fast start at the Commonwealth Games.
Ofori made quick work of his opponent in the men’s 80 kg round of 32, where he faced Sri Lanka’s Sithija Sudamma. He secured the victory just 1:21 into the opening round when the referee stopped the contest.

Boyd, McKerihen steal win against New Zealand
The Canadian women’s bowls pair of Emma Boyd and Kelly McKerihen took on New Zealand in their third-round matchup. Canada edged the opening set 4-3 before New Zealand rallied to win the second set 5-3, overcoming a late Canadian comeback from a 4-1 deficit to force a tiebreak.
With the crowd chanting “CA-NA-DA,” the Canadians delivered in the decisive set, winning it 2-0 to secure the match. The victory improves Canada’s record to 2-1, good for third place in Section C.
