Stegall Secures Top-Five Finish in 1500 Meters at USATF Outdoor Championships

NEW YORK – Claire Stegall secured a top-five finish in the 1500-meter run at the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships on Saturday evening, just over a month after winning the event’s title at the USATF U20 Championships.
After qualifying for the final round on Thursday with a time of 4:05.61, Stegall was poised to go head-to-head with some of the nation’s best mid-distance runners in the 1500 meters inside Icahn Stadium. Through the first 800 meters of the finale, the women were grouped together, with the top 11 separated by less than a second. With 400 meters remaining, Stegall found herself in ninth, but used a split of 46.11 on the final lap, the fourth-fastest final leg of the competition, to climb to fifth as she crossed the finish line with a time of 4:10.24.
The incoming sophomore’s summer isn’t over with the conclusion of the USATF Outdoor Championships. After claiming the USATF U20 title in the 1500 meters in June with a school record time of 4:04.59, Stegall is poised to take the track in the event at the World Athletics U20 Championships, slated for Aug. 5-9 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
A duo of Florida alumni will compete on the final day of the outdoor championships, with Claire Bryant taking the runway in the long jump at 4:01 p.m. ET on Sunday, and Parker Valby lining up for the 5000-meter run at 4:41 p.m. ET.
