Aidan O’Shea has been one of the defining figures of Mayo football for almost two decades.
The powerful Breaffy clubman made his senior debut in 2009 and has gone on to become one of the county’s greatest servants, earning multiple All-Star awards while making a record number of Championship appearances for an outfield player.
Here’s everything you need to know about the Mayo stalwart.
Age and family
Aidan O’Shea was born in Mullingar, Co Westmeath, on June 29, 1990, before his family moved to Breaffy, just outside Castlebar, where he was raised. He is now 36 years old.
Gaelic football runs deep in the O’Shea family. His brothers, Seamus and Conor, have also represented Mayo at senior level, while his father, Jim, has managed Breaffy. The family’s roots are actually in Kerry, with both of O’Shea’s parents originally from the Kingdom.
What is Aidan O’Shea’s job?
Away from football, O’Shea works as an export manager.
He studied at the Dublin Institute of Technology, where he also enjoyed success in the Sigerson Cup before embarking on a career in business.
Wife Kristin and family
O’Shea married long-term partner Kristin McKenzie Vass in August 2024, with the couple tying the knot in Co Kerry.
The pair welcomed their first child together, daughter Romee, in January 2026. O’Shea is also father to an older daughter, Caragh, from a previous relationship.
Speaking earlier this year, O’Shea admitted balancing inter-county football with family life had become a greater consideration as he entered the latter stages of his career.
“You’re leaving the house a lot and you have a newborn in the house,” he said. “There was no doubt about wanting to play, but there were probably some lifestyle things that in previous years I didn’t have to think about.”

Football career
O’Shea made his senior Mayo debut in 2009 and has spent almost two decades at the heart of the county’s football team. Comfortable in midfield, at centre-forward or close to goal, his versatility has made him one of the most influential footballers of his generation.
During his inter-county career, he has won multiple Connacht titles, two National Football League crowns and two All-Star awards.
Few players have shown greater longevity. O’Shea has missed just one Championship match for Mayo since making his debut and now holds the record for the most Championship appearances by an outfield player.
Despite his individual accolades, the All-Ireland title has remained elusive. O’Shea has been part of several Mayo teams that came agonisingly close to ending the county’s long wait for Sam Maguire, making him one of the most recognisable and respected footballers of his era.
