Police, paramedics and coastguard crews were all called to Cornwall’s Fistral Beach on Sunday night.
What appears to be a rescue helicopter has been circling overhead for some time, while eyewitnesses at the scene report that up to nine emergency vehicles were dispatched to the scene at South Fistral.
Surf cams show a number of police at the waterfront, as well as a small crowd at the shore.
Authorities have remained at the scene with what appears to be a thorough search underway – locals say the road near the entrance to the beach has been closed while emergency services work at the scene.
Tracking website FlightRadar shows the helicopter circling over the beach while the incident took place – it’s now thought it has returned to base.
RLNI incident logs indicate two lifeboats were dispatched at 9.37 and 9.33pm.
