And we understand that Makhanya could become the eighth arrival of the summer as negotiations continue the Major League Soccer outfit over a £3million deal.
Makhanya will become the second centre-back to join McInnes’ squad following the deal that brought Ben Godfrey to Glasgow on loan from Atalanta if he puts pen-to-paper. Rangers missed out on a deal to sign Sankhoun Diawara from Troyes.
The Rangers Review understands Makhanya is in discussions over a four-year contract to commit himself to the club. Makhanya – who was part of the South Africa squad at the World Cup – started his career with Stellenbosch in his homeland and has spent the last three years with the Union.
McInnes spoke after the friendly with West Ham United on Sunday and expressed his confidence that Rangers were closing in on their latest recruit on the eve of the Premiership opener with Dundee United. Rangers are also in the market for additions in the final third as McInnes looks to recruit on the flanks.
“Rangers, for long periods [last season], were in the running for a few months,” McInnes said as he looked ahead to the trip to Tannadice and the start of his title challenge.

“We know there are performances here that can win games, so we’ve just got to try and get to our level more often. Individually, you see a lot of players whose reach and levels are really high at times, and we’ve got to try and make sure that we get that more often than not.
“As a team, we’ve got to try and treat each game with the same importance, and hopefully we can get off to a good start.
“I think it’s important that we get off to a good start; we’ve not had that for a few seasons at Rangers, particularly that opening game. I think trying to build confidence, momentum, and belief is key.”
