LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. (7News) — The 27-year-old son of former Washington Commanders and current Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy has been charged after officials said he shot his mother Sunday evening at the family’s Loudoun County home, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded around 7:32 p.m. to the 20000 block of Northpark Drive for a reported shooting. When they arrived, they found a woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.

The victim was identified as Mia Bieniemy, 57, who is reported to be in stable condition. Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman said Mia Bieniemy made the call to 911 following the shooting.
“I’ll just say she was shot multiple times, and we have to go through an entire investigation to determine where everybody was, what they did, what prompted it, and how it all transpired. We’re conducting that investigation right now,” Chapman said.

The sheriff’s office said Elijah Zion Bieniemy, of Ashburn, was arrested and charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. He was taken to the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center, where he is being held without bond.
Chapman confirmed that Elijah Zion Bieniemy is the son of Eric and Mia Bieniemy.
Chapman said there had been no previous incidents reported at the home.
Court records indicate an arraignment scheduled for Monday morning in Loudoun County was continued. The next scheduled court date for Elijah Bieniemy is a preliminary hearing on Aug. 31 at 10 a.m. As of late Monday morning, the public defender was listed as Bieniemy’s attorney in online court records.

The Chiefs released the following statement to 7News:
“The club is aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family. Out of respect for their privacy, we won’t have a comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”
Eric Bieniemy was with the Kansas City Chiefs in St. Joseph, Missouri, earlier Sunday for the team’s second training camp practice. After a previous stint with the team, he was rehired as offensive coordinator for the upcoming NFL season.

Reid said the team’s thoughts are with the Bieniemy family and confirmed Mia is in “stable condition,” calling that a positive update. He added that Bieniemy has the support of the Chiefs organization and will take time away from football to focus on his family.
“Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy and his family. Thoughts and prayers are with them,” Reid said. “We all love EB, and you hate seeing these kind of things happen…The most important thing is that EB has an opportunity to spend some time there and take care of that business.”
Eric Bieniemy spent one season as offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders in 2023. Under head coach Andy Reid, he led the Chiefs offense to two Super Bowl victories in the 2019-20 and 2022-23 seasons.
