Bon Jovi Close Out MSG Residency with Surprise Bruce Springsteen Duet Days After Ending Show Early Due to Sinus Infection

Jon Bon Jovi and his band ended their Madison Square Garden residency on a triumphantly high note.

On Sunday, July 26, Bon Jovi’s longtime friend and fellow New Jersey native Bruce Springsteen surprised the sold-out crowd. After Bon Jovi introduced The Boss as “the king of the great state of New Jersey,” Springsteen joined the band for a duet of “Who Says You Can’t Go Home” then his own 1978 fan-favorite “The Promised Land.”

The show marked Bon Jovi’s ninth and — as of now — final show of their MSG residency, which launched their Forever Tour on July 7. This was the band’s first tour in four years, since the lead singer underwent vocal cord surgery in 2022 and spent years working to get stage-ready once again.

Springsteen’s appearance came just days after Bon Jovi had to abruptly cut the band’s eighth night of the residency short due to illness.

“Don’t throw away your ticket stubs I’m going to figure something out, okay. Just hang onto it, I’m going to figure out how to reschedule,” Bon Jovi told the audience on July 21 before exiting the stage. “I’m gonna have to cool it for a night. I feel great, I’ll see you again soon, bye bye.”

That same night, his rep told PEOPLE in a statement: “Jon Bon Jovi spoke from stage and told fans he has been battling a sinus infection which led to the show’s early ending. As part of the Bon Jovi residency at Madison Square Garden, Jon has said numerous times that it has been a joy to return to live shows for the band. Updated information will be available shortly.”

Weeks before join Bon Jovi, Springsteen actually attended the Tuesday, July 14 Bon Jovi concert at MSG, the frontman revealed on Instagram. “Did this really happen?” the “Livin’ on a Prayer” musician captioned the photo with Springsteen backstage. “Yes, it did.”

Bon Jovi and his idol-turned-friend Springsteen have performed together many times over the years.

Last month, Bon Jovi performed alongside Springsteen at the Music America: The Songs that Shaped Us concert, which celebrated the Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music, per Rolling Stone. The pair jammed with Jackson Browne, Public Enemy and the Disciples of Soul for a performance of Eddie Floyd’s “Raise Your Hand.” Later, they and Steven Van Zandt performed Southside Johnny’s “I Don’t Want to Go Home.”

In February 2024, Springsteen and Bon Jovi performed a duet of two songs at the MusiCares gala, where the “Bed of Roses” performer was being honored as the MusiCares Person of the Year: “Who Says You Can’t Go Home” and “The Promised Land,” the same tracks they played at MSG two years later.

In a recent PEOPLE cover story, the “It’s My Life” musician opened up about his friendship with Springsteen.

“I consider myself, jokingly, the prince of New Jersey,” Bon Jovi said of his succession in Garden State music royalty, after his pal Springsteen, whom he called “the cornerstone of New Jersey rock and roll.”

“Of course, there was Frank Sinatra, there was Frankie Valli, there was Whitney Houston; there’s incredible singers, but the E Street band was hugely important for anyone who picked up an electric guitar,” he added.

Bon Jovi also spoke about how becoming “very good friends” with Springsteen is one of the “highlights of my career because they were our Beatles.”

“[The E Street Band] made the impossible possible — 25 miles from your house was a guy that was making records. They weren’t just the posters on the wall; it was just right there. So when you’re 17, that’s like seeing Jesus and the disciples,” he said.

Bon Jovi opened up about his bond with Springsteen in his 2024 docuseries Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story.

“He was a hero, growing up. [The E Street Band are] all 12, 13, 14 years older, so they’re like big brothers,” he told PEOPLE at the time. “And then, our connection is deep, on a whole different level of friendship, because how many guys can talk like we can talk, in close quarters, about life, and love, and loss … he really is like a big brother.”

Bon Jovi is currently in the midst of the Forever Tour, their first in four years and since the frontman underwent vocal cord surgery.
