The Hadestown stage film was a massive box-office success during its opening weekend, taking Hamilton‘s crown for the highest-grossing live stage capture film in box-office history.
The pro-shot of the hit Broadway and West End musical opened to $10.2 million at 1,949 locations, according to Deadline—surpassing Hamilton‘s record of $10.1 million from last September. The film was initially projected to gross $9.69 million but positive word of mouth and repeat viewings pushed Hadestown past the $10 million mark. Due to demand, additional screenings are being added, with producers saying that the film is now expected to stay in movie theatres “indefinitely.” Tickets for the North America release are on sale here.
Said Hadestown producer Mara Isaacs in a statement, “We’re incredibly proud of this film. It’s the result of a rare creative partnership between the Steam Motion and Sound Team, led by Brett Sullivan, and the creative heart of Hadestown itself—Rachel Chavkin, whose original direction and contribution to the film are indelible, alongside Anaïs Mitchell and myself. So much intention and care went into each choice, and it’s especially gratifying to see how audiences have responded.”
Titled Hadestown: The Musical, the capture was released in theatres across North America July 24, and features Reeve Carney as Orpheus, André De Shields in his Tony-winning performance as Hermes, Amber Gray as Persephone, Eva Noblezada as Eurydice, and Patrick Page as Hades. The original Broadway cast members returned to their roles in 2025 for a limited engagement at London’s Lyric Theatre; three performances were filmed. The new film made its premiere June 8 at the TriBeCa Film Festival.

The stage production, written by Anaïs Mitchell and directed by Rachel Chavkin, was filmed by director Brett Sullivan of Steam Motion and Sound. Bleecker Street’s event cinema division Crosswalk and LD Entertainment acquired the rights for North America and all English speaking territories.

The full West End cast featured in the film also includes Bella Brown, Madeline Charlemagne, and Allie Daniel as the Fates; Lauren Azania, Tiago Dhondt Bamberger, Ryesha Higgs, Waylon Jacobs, and Christopher Short as the Workers; and Lucinda Buckley, Francessca Daniella-Baker, Winny Herbert, and Miriam Nyarko as Swings.

Hadestown is in its seventh year on Broadway at the Walter Kerr Theatre and in its third year in the West End (returning to London, five years after its 2018 engagement at the National Theatre). The record-breaking North American tour completed its coast-to-coast three-year run in 2024, and productions have played to acclaim across the globe in South Korea, Sydney, Melbourne, and Amsterdam.
Singer-songwriter Mitchell’s folk- and jazz-infused musical layers the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice with that of Hades and Persephone, intertwining the actions—and consequences—of gods and mortals. Hadestown originally began as a theatrical concert performed by Mitchell.
The creative team features Tony-winning set designer Rachel Hauck, Tony-nominated costume designer Michael Krass, Tony-winning lighting designer Bradley King, Tony-winning sound designers Nevin Steinberg and Jessica Paz, choreographer David Neumann, and dramaturg Ken Cerniglia. Musical supervision and vocal arrangements are by Liam Robinson, with arrangements and orchestrations by Tony winners Michael Chorney and Todd Sickafoose.
The show, featuring a book and score by Mitchell, won eight 2019 Tony Awards: Best Director of a Musical (Rachel Chavkin), Best Featured Actor in a Musical (André De Shields), Best Lighting Design of a Musical (Bradley King), Best Scenic Design of a Musical (Rachel Hauck), Best Sound Design of a Musical (Jessica Paz and Nevin Steinberg), Best Orchestrations (Michael Chorney and Todd Sickafoose), Best Original Score (Mitchell), and Best Musical.
Hadestown is produced on Broadway by Mara Isaacs, Dale Franzen, Hunter Arnold, and Tom Kirdahy. They also serve as producers on the film.
