The Kansas basketball and Wichita State alumni teams faced off Monday in The Basketball Tournament, in a game that was played in Wichita, and KU’s JHX Hoops team emerged with a 64-59 win.
This game was played in the semifinals of the alumni portion of the TBT bracket. JHX Hoops had to beat Purple Reign, Kansas State’s alumni team, in a three-game series to reach this point. JHX Hoops’ win against the AfterShocks, Wichita State’s team, means it’ll advance to the finals of the alumni side of the bracket and have a chance to advance to the championship game — which would be played against the winner of the non-alumni side of the bracket.

For the third-straight game, Frank Mason III delivered a game-winning shot for JHX Hoops during the Elam Ending. This was a 3-pointer that clinched a 64-59 win. JHX Hoops eliminates the AfterShocks, and postgame it appeared that things got heated again between the two teams.
It’s time to go into the Elam Ending, something that JHX Hoops has thrived in during recent games. JHX Hoops leads 56-55, after a back-and-forth fourth quarter that has seen Zeke Mayo thrive. The target score with will be 64.
For a moment, it looked like the AfterShocks were going to be able to pull away in the third quarter. But JHX Hoops recovered, and leads 48-44 after three quarters of play. The game has remained chippy at times, but nothing’s happened that has led to the sort of situation that saw a number of players have to exit the game in the first half.
This most recent stretch of play will be remembered for an altercation that began under the basket that led to a number of players not being allowed to finish the game. While it did not appear that a significant fight broke out, because of players leaving the bench and other actions unfolding that was the decision made by the officials. The broadcast outlined that each team has six players left who can participate, and for JHX Hoops that’s Frank Mason III, Carlton Bragg Jr., Jacob Hanna, Zeke Mayo, Billy Preston and Andrew Orr.
Points have been hard to come by in the second quarter, on both sides. Shots just aren’t falling at the rate you might expect, given the looks players have been able to get. JHX Hoops needs to bounce back and gain some momentum here going into halftime, in front of a hostile crowd.
JHX Hoops maintains a slim lead at the end of the first quarter, but the AfterShocks are more than capable of building a lead of their own. KU’s alumni team is up 16-15 going into the second quarter. Kansas needs to do better rebounding the ball, and having an offense that can threaten from behind the arc.
JHX Hoops has finally gotten off to a quality start, but it’s still in the midst of a challenging game. The AfterShocks only trail 10-9 with about three and a half minutes left in the first quarter. JHX Hoops will need to look to open up more opportunities for Zeke Mayo to be a threat from behind the arc offensively.
