The slow-moving nature of the system means that areas over Central and Western Massachusetts will see rainfall well before areas over Southeastern Massachusetts. Your smartphone may go from looking like it’s going to rain Tuesday to mostly sunny skies depending on where you are in the region. It’s going to take a while, but eventually the showers and even embedded thunderstorms and downpours will rotate east to Boston.
Tuesday — A few areas in Western Massachusetts will see showers starting Tuesday afternoon, and there’s a small risk of a shower farther east to Route 128. But eastern areas of New England will stay dry most of the day.
Wednesday — The chance of rainfall in Boston peaks late Wednesday morning through the afternoon, making the evening commute quite wet.
You should expect some areas to see a flash flood watch between Tuesday and Thursday. I think the most likely spots will be west of I-495, although that doesn’t mean we couldn’t see those same alerts. A flood watch has already been issued for Western Massachusetts and the western half of Connecticut for Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday night.

Aside from the rain, Tuesday is expected to be mostly cloudy, with temperatures staying in the mid- to upper 70s, west of I-91. To the east, temperatures will be warmer, even getting into the low 80s. Also, humidity levels will remain high this week, especially compared to the dry air we’ve recently experienced.
With more cloud cover on Wednesday, it’s less likely that anywhere will reach 80 degrees.

Because the area of energy moving through the jet stream will not be moving quickly, the chance for showers will linger into Thursday.

Cape Cod and the islands: Partly to mostly sunny skies on Tuesday with highs approaching 80. Increasing clouds on Wednesday with a few showers, with temperatures in the upper 70s.
Rhode Island: Sunshine blending with clouds to the north on Tuesday with temperatures in the 70s to near 80. Look for scattered showers on Wednesday with highs in the upper 70s.
New Hampshire: A few showers developing over southern areas Tuesday with some sunshine up north; temperatures in the 70s to lower 80s. More showers on Wednesday with highs in the upper 70s.
Vermont: Partly sunny and warm with perhaps a few showers. Highs in the lower 80s. Cooler with temperatures in the 70s along with a couple of showers on Wednesday and heavier downpours possible.
Maine: Look for early-morning fog, otherwise partly to mostly sunny on Tuesday with highs in the lower 80s, cooler at the beaches. Showers arrive later Wednesday.
