How 600 Calorie Fueling Made 2026 the Fastest Tour de France

A brutal heat wave and a gruesome final push through the Alps didn’t slow down the 2026 Tour de France.

In fact, this year’s Tour was the fastest edition in history with an average speed of 43.328kph.

That’s more than half a kilometer per hour faster than the previous best of 42.849kph recorded last year.

It was a whirlwind three weeks that also saw the fastest-ever Tour de France road stage, a record-breaking ascent of Alpe d’Huez, and eight road stages won at more than 45kph.

And we hate to say we told you so, but we called it before the race.

It seemed inevitable that this year’s Tour de France would be the fastest edition in history. The 43kph barrier looked at threat far before Tadej Pogačar landed in to Barcelona.

Why such a certainty?

Because every facet of WorldTour performance has been accelerating since the COVID pandemic. The racing intensity and average speeds of the Tour de France have accelerated in line with them.

More carbs than science says makes sense

Pro cycling has evolved into a different sport from as recently as the Chris Froome era.

From fueling and aerodynamics to recovery and cooling, every corner of performance is optimized, tested, and optimized again.

Nutrition – and more specifically, carbohydrate – is at the center of the modern performance dashboard.

The “carbohydrate revolution” was hailed as the first driving force of the high-speed evolution of the Pogi-era Tour de France.

Newly formulated nutrition products and a shift in focus from [low] weight to [high] watts made it normal for riders to eat 120 grams of carbohydrates per hour on the bike.

And for a time, there was a consensus that this 500-calorie-per-hour pipeline of carb gels and drinks was the limit.

Multiple studies suggest that opening the faucet further has no benefit to performance and increases riders’ risk of gut rot.

Intriguingly, data suggests riders are ignoring that science.

There are multiple examples from the 2026 Tour de France of riders eating far beyond any supposed 120-gram threshold.

Recent social media posts show Jonas Vingegaard and fellow spindly climber Lennert van Eetvelt were fueling at 140g of carbs (i.e., 560 calories) per hour in the most intense days of racing.

Norse giant Jonas Abrahamsen shared Instagram posts revealing details of his stomach-turning 160g per hour (640 calories) carbohydrate targets. For real-life context, that’s a “share size” 6oz bag of gummy bears, every hour, for maybe five hours.

And while Pogačar hasn’t shared any of his nutrition data from the 2026 Tour de France, he has previously revealed he was eating 130 grams of carbohydrate per hour during the spring classics.

Of course, this is a very small sample, and even gluttons like Abrahamsen will have been more moderate on select stages.

But there does seem to have been a trend north.

Several WorldTour nutritionists have told Velo it’s become rare for riders to eat below 120g per hour during grand tours.

Why does that matter?

Because while excess carbohydrate might not benefit in-the-moment performance, it super-charges recovery in a three-week, 43kph race.

Riders can hit the red line all the way to Paris.

Fueling is seen as the driving force behind the high-speed evolution of the Tour de France, but of course, it’s certainly not the only force.

Bike, wheel, and tire technology, aerodynamics, the normalization of altitude and heat training, and the AI boom – they all contribute to the Tour’s push toward warp speed.

More riders were able to tap into the full complement of these things in 2026.

A crop of nouveau riche superteams was born at the start of the season, raising the collective level of staffing and resources in the WorldTour peloton.

Lidl-Trek, Decathlon-CMA CGM, and Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe come to this year’s Tour with more money, deeper rosters, and higher ambition.

The $60-million-a-year UAE Emirates-XRG team of Pogačar and Isaac del Toro was no longer the only super squad in the race.

Sepp Kuss, a veteran of 17 grand tours and six Tours de France, said the extra-dialed peloton whipped itself into a frenzy of ruthless ambition at the 2026 Tour de France.

“This year was one of the toughest,” Kuss said when asked how this year’s race compared to others. “The course was maybe not the hardest, but the way we raced every stage made it really tough.

“The level is so high in the peloton now that everyone wants to win a stage and every stage then becomes crazy fast,” he said.

A new density of superteams appeared at the grand départ of the 2026 Tour de France. They dragged the race into fast forward.

Nothing will slow down the Tour de Frace

The budgets, ambitions, and fueling strategies of the Tour de France will rise every year.

Not even climate change will slow it down now that heat training has become so much of a non-negotiable.

It will be no shock if the 43.3kph record is rewritten in 12 months time.
