Scattered thunderstorms to develop ahead of the cold front, primarily targeting the mountains of western North Carolina through late afternoon and moving into the Upstate during the evening and early overnight hours.
A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for the mountains through 8 PM. While severe weather is possible outside the watch area, this is the most likely area to see severe weather.
The atmosphere Tuesday afternoon is loaded with instability combined with strong wind shear. This combination favors thunderstorms that can produce the damaging winds, large hail, and even an isolated tornado threat.
