A magnitude 4.3 earthquake struck east-southeast of Cloverdale on Tuesday evening, July 28, followed less than a minute later by a magnitude 2.5 aftershock, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The larger earthquake occurred at 7:40 p.m. about 5 miles southeast of Cloverdale at a depth of about 3.4 miles. The smaller aftershock struck about 38 seconds later in nearly the same location at a depth of about 2.6 miles.
“Good-sized shaker,” state Sen. Mike McGuire, whose district includes northern Sonoma County, wrote in a Tuesday Facebook post. “No early reports of damage or injuries.”
The U.S. Geological Survey said the temblor was centered near The Geysers geothermal area, where earthquakes occur frequently.
As of Wednesday morning, there were no reports of injuries or significant damage.
The agency encourages people who felt the shaking to submit reports through its “Did You Feel It?” program to help scientists better understand how widely the earthquakes were felt. People reported light shaking near the epicenter in Cloverdale and very light shaking as far north as Ukiah.
