MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway released a community update online on Thursday evening about the ongoing Williamson Street closure at the location of the Corey Ruiz memorial.
“What’s happening at the intersection of Williamson Street and Baldwin Street is not sustainable or safe,” Rhodes-Conway said. “There are a number of immediate public safety and public health concerns that must not be ignored.”
The mayor highlighted the lack of bathrooms, food preparation safety, emergency management service response time and safety at the intersection.
In her statement, the mayor did not acknowledge what the city will be doing in regard to the encampment moving forward.
In the statement, Rhodes-Conway asked the entire community to take this seriously and be part of the solution.
“City staff, local elected officials, and neighborhood leaders are continuing to connect with residents and local businesses to address ongoing concerns in the Marquette neighborhood,” Rhodes-Conway said. “This work is ongoing and takes many forms. The goal remains to engage residents, community organizers, and the business community to work on a path that prioritizes safety, action, and remembering Corey Ruiz.”
A memorial at the intersection of Williamson and South Baldwin streets continues to grow. City trucks have blocked off the area, creating space for a grieving community after Ruiz was shot and killed by a Madison police officer last week.
WMTV 15 has repeatedly asked the mayor’s office for an interview which has been declined.
