‘They’re so similar’: Princess Anne enjoys rare brother-sister day out with youngest sibling in ‘double denim’
Princess Anne isn’t known as the ‘hardest working royal’ for nothing. The Princess Royal is often out at events and engagements and, while she does many of these outings solo, she sometimes supports her brother, the King in his efforts, too. However, this week, Princess Anne made a rare, public trip with her youngest sibling, Prince Edward – also known as the Duke of Edinburgh. And for the occasion, Princess Anne went for a much more casual look than we usually see from her.
The Princess and her brother, Prince Edward, were in Glasgow for this year’s Commonwealth Games on on Thursday (30 July). They don’t often complete visits as a pair, but appeared to be enjoying each other’s company, and the family resemblance is clear. They’re so similar! The duo were also joined for their Glasgow trip by their respective partner; Prince Edward’s wife, Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh and Princess Anne’s husband Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence.

The group were watching the track racing at the Sir Chris Hoy velodrome and athletics. For the visit, Princess Anne opted for a ‘double denim’ look, wearing a light denim blazer over a pair of dark, straight leg jeans. She even added an almost denim-like pattern blue scarf around her neck. Her look was a brief reprise from the more formal dresses which we are so used to seeing from the women of the Royal Family in on public occasions.

A video shared by the royal family showed the Princess Royal arriving at the Glasgow venue and shook hands as she met with various team members, including the enthusiastic mascot. Princess Anne was in great spirits as she laughed and chatted with everybody before taking her seat to watch the action from the stands.

Playing for Great Britain is something Princess Anne knows much about as she – as well as her daughter – Zara Tindall have both competed for their country in equestrian sports. Indeed, sporting is something the Royal Family support on many fronts, with a number of patronages to various organisations and bodies between them. Until recently, for instance, Prince William was president of the Football Association and is often seen cheering in the crowd at matches. The Princess of Wales, meanwhile, is a regular fixture at Wimbledon finals, while almost all the adult royals attend Royal Ascot together each year.

And, at the Commonwealth Games there’s been quite the royal presence at the event so far, with the King and Queen having a starring role in the opening ceremony. Their entrance to the event was more than a little special, and mirrored the late Queen Elizabeth II’s iconic James Bond cameo for the 2012 London Olympic Games. In a clip played at the opening of the event, we saw the TARDIS arriving at Balmoral before the shadows of King Charles and Queen Camilla stepped inside the famous blue police box. Back in the live stadium, the iconic Dr Who theme tune played as the TARDIS appeared on stage. And who should step out but King Charles and Queen Camilla?

The original blue police boxes were invented by Scottish architect, Gilbert MacKenzie Trench, while there have also been multiple Scottish actors playing the Doctor, including Peter Capaldi and David Tennant. Given Doctor Who is such a famous and much-loved touchstone of British culture around the world, it was the perfect way to open the Games.
