The Maine Secretary of State’s Office says it will not weigh in on whether Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Troy Jackson is eligible to run under Maine’s so-called “sore loser” law.
Deputy Secretary of State Kate O’Brien told CBS13 the issue is one for the political parties to resolve, not the Secretary of State’s Office.
She also said that, as far as the state is concerned, Jackson remains on the ballot.
The challenge argues Maine’s “sore loser” law makes Jackson ineligible to appear on the general election ballot for U.S. Senate after losing the Democratic primary for governor.
Others, however, argue the law applies only when a candidate loses a primary for one office and then seeks the same office in the general election as an independent or under a different party, rather than running for a different office altogether.
Barring a successful legal challenge, the issue appears settled for now.
